Отношения Турции и России имеют многовековую историю, в которой преобладают войны и соперничество. По политической инициативе обеих сторон в начале 2000-х годов страны делать упор на сотрудничество. С тех пор они тесно сотрудничают в разных сферах, а стремительный рост политических контактов и торгово-экономических связей между Россией и Турцией в последние 15 лет показал, что общие интересы между ними действительно существуют.
Однако их национальные стратегии часто расходились на территориях от Кавказа до Ближнего Востока и Черного моря. Таким образом, турецко-российские отношения можно охарактеризовать как «сотрудничающее соперничество» или «враждебное сотрудничество».
